⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
The Ultimate Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams contains all five novels from the classic science fiction Hitchhiker series in one volume. The series chronicles the intergalactic travels and adventures of Arthur Dent, along with an interesting cast of characters that he meets along the way. The first novel, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, begins Arthur’s journey with him being saved by Ford Prefect seconds before the Earth is destroyed. Together they begin a wild journey through time and space, hitchhiking along the way. The following four novels (and bonus story, Young Zaphod Plays it Safe) continue Arthur and Ford’s (along with many other characters) voyage through the universe.
I absolutely loved this series. There is such an immense amount of hilarious and intriguing plot that it is truly impossible to summarize this entire volume in only so much space, but believe me, it is an amazing series. My favorite character was unquestionably Marvin the Paranoid Android because he never failed to make me both want to laugh and cry at the same time. My main complaint is that I did not particularly love the ending of the last novel, Mostly Harmless. It was not very effective in tying the whole series together and did not feel like the ending the series deserved. I have yet to decide if I will read And Another Thing..., the final installment in the series written by Eoin Colfer, after Adams’ death, because I am undecided on how I feel about it not being written by Adams. Even if it is amazing, I think it will still feel at least a little odd. Either way, this is a classic comedy science fiction series that every sci-fi lover should read!
