'The Moon is Down' by John Steinbeck, 112 pages - Instagram @c_reads_books

The Moon is Down by John Steinbeck recounts a World War II tale of a small town in Europe, recently occupied by the enemy. The once peaceful town is now forced to deal with betrayal and deceit, imposed on them from both inside and out of the community. Steinbeck explores themes of war and human nature through analyzing the enemy’s thoughts and motives.

I did not particularly love this book. I overall love Steinbeck as an author, yet this book of his was not my favorite by any means. I honestly cannot give concrete reasons as to why I liked this story less than others of Steinbeck’s, I mostly just felt not very interested in the story for whatever reason. It did not seem as intriguing as his other work, and I was not able to really connect to most of the characters. I still hold Steinbeck in high regard, as his other work has been some of my absolute favorite, with amazingly developed and complex characters, yet for whatever reason I did not particularly connect with or love this story. I still would not say I completely disliked this book either, and think it is a good quick read, just not my personal favorite compared to some of Steinbeck’s other work.
