'The House on Mango Street' by Sandra Cisneros, 110 pages - Instagram @c_reads_books

Two days ago I read The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. This book tells the story of Esperanza Cordero, a young girl growing up in the Latino area of Chicago. Through a series of vignettes narrated by Esperanza, the sometimes beautiful and sometimes harsh realities of life in Esperanza’s neighborhood are revealed. Feeling stuck in a place she doesn’t want to belong to, Esperanza lives her life with dreams of who she will become.

I really enjoyed this book. The story was beautiful and captivating, yet also dark and hopeless at times. I liked the structure of the book, with it being much different from most of the books I read. Rather than just narrating the daily life of Esperanza, Cisneros decided to instead focus on specific and memorable moments in life, teaching a lesson and saying something important on every page. After reading this book, I completely understand why The House on Mango Street is regarded as a coming-of-age classic, and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a beautiful and insightful quick read!
