Sula by Toni Morrison tells the story of the friendship of Nel and Sula, two girls who meet as children in the small town of Medallion, Ohio. Living in the Bottom, the hills of the town that house the Black community, Nel and Sula are as much a product of their environment as they are each other’s friendship. As the girls grow up into women, their friendship is tested with a betrayal that could change everything.

I very much liked this book. I found it very interesting to watch Nel and Sula grow up, having learned their families’ histories and the history of the Bottom. I especially enjoyed seeing how Nel and Sula’s friendship that began in childhood greatly influenced the people they became. This book delves into the idea of identity and how people influence and change each other, which I found fascinating. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a good and complex story!
