⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
On Tyranny by Timothy Snyder details “twenty lessons from the twentieth century” on tyranny and how to avoid its control. Making comparisons between Hitler’s Nazi Germany and the present (it was published in 2017), Snyder warns us of the onset and possibility of tyranny and the loss of democracy. Drawing from numerous historical examples, he encourages us to prevent the past from repeating itself and work towards a better country for us all.
I liked this book. I have read a fair amount of books on politics, and it’s a topic I’ve always found intriguing. What I really found interesting about this book was the wide range of historical connections Snyder makes, wanting to educate people (especially the youth) in order to prevent a repeat of the past. I also liked the way the book is laid out/set up, with each of the twenty lessons being concise, and then explained in further detail. I think this book, and a lot of the points and connections Snyder makes in it, are also very relevant and useful today, especially with the election going on. Overall, I really liked this book, and would recommend it to anyone interested in politics!
