⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell chronicles Orwell’s experiences fighting as a Republican against the Nationalists in the Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1939. Orwell originally went to Spain to merely report on the war as a journalist, but soon found himself wound up as a participant. He recounts his experiences fighting on the front and his near-fatal wound, with the book’s ending coinciding with Orwell’s departure from Spain and return to England at the end of the war. Additionally, Orwell includes two Appendixes that are solely dedicated to expressing his views on the political aspects of the war, as well as Spanish politics in general, including the views of parties such as the Anarchist, Communist, Nationalist, and Fascist parties.
I loved this book, as I do all of Orwell’s work. This is my sixth book by him, and I have yet to be disappointed. I vastly enjoyed reading Orwell’s first accounts of war. I love all of Orwell’s work, but there is something especially real and authentic about his non-fiction writings. Down and Out in Paris and London and (now) Homage to Catalonia will always have a special place in my heart. Furthermore, I love reading about different political views (The Communist Manifesto was a very interesting read and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone), and I always appreciate reading Orwell’s take on politics. Overall, this book is another favorite that I will be adding to my collection of Orwell!
